How to Pick and Add Payment Gateways

Payment gateways are services used for when your customers make a payment for your goods or services. We’re going to take a look at which payment gateways work best for your type of store.  While most are easy to setup, knowing which payment gateways to offer on your site will save you a lot of time and trouble down the road.  The following are based on the payment gateways offered currently through Zuhah.

Where to Find Your Payment Gateways

1. Go to the admin Dashboard.

2. Click “Payment Gateways“.

3. Select which payment gateway to configure.  The Payment Gateways screen provides a quick glance into the status of your gateways.

PayPal

PayPal is the most popular payment gateway for many ecommerce stores.  If you want to accept credit cards or let others pay with their PayPal account, then this is the right option for you.
  • You will need a PayPal account, and then simply enter in your PayPal account email address to let people start purchasing from your store.
  • PayPal charges a transaction fee for all your orders.  Please visit PayPal for information on different types of accounts and their fees.
  • Your customers don’t have to have a Paypal account in order to pay via credit card through PayPal.

Popular PayPal settings:

  • Enable/Disable: Allow or disallow this payment option.
  • Title: The name of the payment in which the user sees at checkout.
  • Description: Explanation for the payment gateway.
  • PayPal Email: The PayPal account email address you want to use.
  • Shipping Details: If you use Paypal for shipping labels, you can send the shipping address to PayPal rather than the billing.
  • PayPal sandbox: Used to test payments.

BACS (Bank Account Clearing System)

Also known as Direct Bank Transfer, you could also allow payments via BACS, which is popular in some countries.  BACS essentially lets someone wire the money to you.
  • All transactions then take place between banks, and will show up in your bank statement.
  • Some banks charge fees for BACS.  Please contact your bank for more information.
  • BACS’s advantage is that it lets people pay online and offline \
  • BACS’s are usually faster than checks.
  • BACS’s biggest disadvantage is that you are showing your bank account number publicly, which depending on your business, you’ll need to decide if this is necessary.  Although account numbers alone don’t necessarily indicate a security risk, if a unauthorized user obtains other sensitive about you, your bank account could be compromised.

  • Title: The name of the payment in which the user sees at checkout.
  • Description: Explanation for the payment gateway.

Checks/e-Checks

Once the method of choice among consumers, checks have given way to credit cards and debit cards.  However, there are still many users of checks today, and many more have moved to e-checks.  If you ecommerce store deals locally or can allow checks to clear, you may still have reasons to accept checks.
  • International Checks can take 30 days or more to clear.
  • Checks are not a guaranteed form of payment, so you probably would want to wait until the check clears to ship the product.
  • Banks usually do not charge additional fees for e-Checks payments. Please check with your bank.
  • Many business have avoided checks altogether due to the overhead in time and costs involved.
  • Your bank may penalize you with fees if a check bounces.

COD (Cash on Delivery)

Cash on delivery has been around the longest.  Most larger business have avoided COD’s with products; however its still popular with services that deliver consumable goods.  COD’s are also popular with used items and pick-ups.  If your ecommerce store deals locally, has a physical store, or performs delivery services, then COD’s could be for you.
  • COD’s lets you pay in cash.
  • If you are delivering long distances, COD’s are not recommended.
  • COD’s are the most popular form of payment for classifieds and used goods.
  Popular COD settings:
  • Enable/Disable: Allow or disallow this payment option.
  • Title: The name of the payment in which the user sees at checkout.
  • Description: Explanation for the payment gateway.
  • Instructions: Any special directions or notes.
